How Does the Pokémon Showdown Damage Calculator Work?
The Showdown Damage Calculator uses the official Pokémon game damage formula to compute results. Here is the core Gen 5–9 damage formula used by the calculator:
× Targets × Weather × Badge × Critical
× Random × STAB × Type1 × Type2 × Burn × Other)
Each factor in this formula corresponds to a game mechanic:
| Factor | What It Represents | Example Values |
|---|---|---|
| BasePower | Move's base power | 80 (Surf), 120 (Earthquake) |
| Atk / Def | Attacker's Attack (or Sp. Atk) vs Defender's Defense (or Sp. Def) | Calculated from base + EVs + IVs + Nature |
| STAB | Same Type Attack Bonus (×1.5, or ×2.0 with Tera in Gen 9) | Fire move from Fire-type Pokémon |
| Type1 × Type2 | Type effectiveness multipliers | ×2 super effective, ×0.5 not very effective, ×0 immune |
| Critical | Critical hit multiplier | ×1.5 (Gen 6+) |
| Random | Damage roll (85–100%) | 16 different rolls |
| Weather | Sun/Rain/Sand/Snow modifier | ×1.5 Fire in Sun, ×0.5 Fire in Rain |
Key Features of Our Free Pokémon Showdown Calculator
1. Damage Calculator (Attack vs Defense)
The core feature of any Pokemon Battle Calculator. Enter your attacker's Attack or Sp. Attack stat (including EVs, IVs, and nature), the move's base power, and the defender's Defense or Sp. Def stat. The tool instantly returns the minimum and maximum damage, percentage of HP, and whether the move achieves an OHKO (One-Hit KO) or 2HKO (Two-Hit KO).
2. IV & EV Stat Calculator
Individual Values (IVs) and Effort Values (EVs) dramatically affect your Pokémon's final stats. Our Pokemon IV Calculator and Pokemon EV Calculator use the official formulas to show you the exact stat totals for any combination. This is crucial for EV training and building optimized competitive spreads for Smogon and VGC.
3. Speed Tier Calculator
Speed tiers determine which Pokémon moves first — one of the most strategically important factors in competitive play. Our Pokemon Speed Calculator lets you compare two Pokémon's effective speeds including Choice Scarf (×1.5), Tailwind (×2.0), paralysis (÷2), and weather-triggered abilities like Swift Swim and Chlorophyll.
4. Type Effectiveness / Weakness Calculator
The Pokemon Type Calculator and Pokemon Weakness Calculator instantly show you type matchup multipliers. Select any attacking type and one or two defending types to see if the move is ×4 super effective, ×2 effective, ×1 neutral, ×0.5 not very effective, ×0.25 doubly resisted, or ×0 immune.
5. OHKO / 2HKO Probability Tool
Competitive Pokémon battles hinge on KO thresholds. Our OHKO Calculator and 2HKO Calculator tell you exactly how many hits a Pokémon needs to faint another, and the probability based on damage rolls. This helps you decide between two moves or two EV spreads.
6. Tera Type Calculator (Gen 9 / Scarlet & Violet)
Generation 9 introduced the Terastallization mechanic. Our Pokemon Showdown Tera Calculator models how Tera Type changes STAB and type effectiveness, allowing you to plan around this powerful mechanic in VGC 2024 and Smogon Gen 9 formats.
Generation-Specific Calculator Guide (Gen 1–9)
The Pokémon damage formula has evolved across generations. Here is a quick reference for each generation:
| Generation | Games | Key Mechanic | Formula Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 | Red, Blue, Yellow | Special stat (combined SpA/SpD), no held items | Different badge boost, critical hit formula, no type immunity stacking |
| Gen 2 | Gold, Silver, Crystal | Sp. Atk / Sp. Def split, berries, held items introduced | Light Ball mechanic, distinct critical hit formula |
| Gen 3 | Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald | Abilities introduced (Huge Power, Intimidate, etc.) | Modern formula introduced; weather abilities finalized |
| Gen 4 | Diamond, Pearl, Platinum | Physical/Special split by move, not type | Major formula overhaul; game-changing for competitive play |
| Gen 5 | Black, White, BW2 | Terrain not yet present; weather wars meta | Standard modern formula baseline |
| Gen 6 | X, Y, ORAS | Fairy type added; Mega Evolutions; critical hit ×1.5 | Critical hits changed from ×2 to ×1.5 |
| Gen 7 | Sun, Moon, USUM | Terrain mechanics (Electric/Grassy/Psychic/Misty) | Z-moves, terrain multipliers added |
| Gen 8 | Sword, Shield | Dynamax; weather/terrain enhanced | Max moves, G-Max moves in formula |
| Gen 9 | Scarlet, Violet | Terastallization; Paradox Pokémon; new abilities | Tera STAB ×2.0, type change; Booster Energy |
Note: Our calculator above defaults to the Gen 9 (Scarlet & Violet) formula. Use the generation tabs at the top of the Damage Calculator to switch between Gen 1–9 formulas. Each generation applies the correct modifiers automatically.
How to Use the Pokémon Showdown Damage Calculator – Step-by-Step Guide
- Choose your generation — Click the appropriate tab (Gen 9 for Scarlet & Violet, Gen 8 for Sword & Shield, etc.)
- Enter attacker details — Input the attacking Pokémon's Attack or Sp. Atk stat. This stat includes EVs, IVs, and nature. Use the Stat Calculator tool if you need to compute it first.
- Set move details — Enter the move's base power, type (for STAB calculation), and category (Physical or Special).
- Enter defender details — Input the defending Pokémon's Defense or Sp. Def stat and total HP. Select both defender types for accurate type effectiveness.
- Apply modifiers — Set weather (Sun, Rain, Sand, Snow), terrain, screens (Reflect, Light Screen), abilities, items, and boosts.
- Add Gen 9 specifics — If using Gen 9, select the attacker's Tera Type for Terastallization calculations.
- Click Calculate — The tool returns the exact damage range (min–max), percentage of HP dealt, and KO status (OHKO / 2HKO / 3HKO / Safe).
Pokémon Showdown Calculator for Competitive Formats
Smogon OU / Uber / UU
Smogon formats are singles battles where knowing exact damage is crucial. Use the Smogon damage calculator to verify whether your Pokémon can survive key threats, ensure your attacker OHKOs specific targets, and fine-tune EV spreads to hit exact damage thresholds.
VGC (Video Game Championships) / Doubles
VGC doubles battles involve targeting calculations and spread move damage. The Pokemon Showdown Doubles Calculator accounts for spread move damage reduction (×0.75 in Gen 5+) and Tera Type changes critical in VGC 2024 meta.
Random Battle
Even in Pokemon Showdown Random Battle, knowing approximate damage ranges helps you make better in-game decisions without needing a team builder.
EV Spreads and IV Spreads Explained
EV Spreads (Effort Value Spreads) are one of the most important aspects of competitive Pokémon building. Every Pokémon has a maximum of 510 total EVs (actually 508 usable, since EVs work in groups of 4), with a maximum of 252 EVs per stat. Common EV spreads include:
- 252 Atk / 4 HP / 252 Spe — Standard physical sweeper spread
- 252 SpA / 4 HP / 252 Spe — Standard special sweeper spread
- 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD — Physical wall spread
- 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD — Special wall spread
- 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA — Bulky support spread
IV Spreads — Individual Values range from 0 to 31 per stat. Competitive Pokémon typically run 31 IVs in all stats. However, exceptions exist: 0 Speed IVs are used on Trick Room setters, and 0 Attack IVs minimize Confusion and Foul Play damage on special attackers.
Understanding STAB, Type Effectiveness, and Battle Modifiers
STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus)
When a Pokémon uses a move that matches one of its own types, it receives a ×1.5 STAB multiplier. In Gen 9 with Terastallization, if the Tera Type matches the move type, the STAB becomes ×2.0, making Tera incredibly powerful for damage output.
Type Effectiveness Multipliers
Type matchups are foundational to Pokémon strategy. The key multipliers are:
- ×4 — Doubly super effective (e.g., Rock vs Fire/Flying)
- ×2 — Super effective
- ×1 — Neutral
- ×0.5 — Not very effective
- ×0.25 — Doubly resisted
- ×0 — Immune (no damage)
Weather Effects on Damage
- Sunny Day / Drought: Fire moves ×1.5, Water moves ×0.5
- Rain / Drizzle: Water moves ×1.5, Fire moves ×0.5
- Sandstorm: Rock-types gain ×1.5 Sp. Def
- Snow (Gen 9) / Hail (Gen 8): Ice-types gain ×1.5 Defense (Gen 9)
Terrain Effects on Damage
- Electric Terrain: Electric moves ×1.3 for grounded Pokémon
- Grassy Terrain: Grass moves ×1.3, Earthquake/Bulldoze ×0.5
- Psychic Terrain: Psychic moves ×1.3, priority moves blocked
- Misty Terrain: Dragon moves ×0.5 for grounded Pokémon
