How many Ayat does Surah Al-Qamar have?
Why is Surah Al-Qamar called "The Moon"?
“The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].” (54:1)
This verse refers to one of the greatest miracles given to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) — the splitting of the moon. The disbelievers of Makkah had demanded a sign, so the Prophet (ﷺ) pointed to the moon and it split into two parts — one on each side of the mountain of Abu Qubays. The Companions witnessed it, and the disbelievers said: “Muhammad has performed magic on you.” (Sahih Bukhari 4864)
The event is confirmed both by the Qur'an and the authentic hadith, and by multiple narrations from Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn Abbas, Anas, and others (may Allah be pleased with them all).
The name teaches three truths:
1. Miracles are real — Allah grants His prophets supernatural signs
2. The Hour is near — the splitting of the moon is a sign that the Day of Judgment is approaching
3. Disbelievers reject even clear signs — despite the miracle, they called it magic
The Surah uses this miracle to warn the disbelievers and to call the believers to reflect on the signs of Allah.
What is the meaning of verse 17 of Surah Al-Qamar?
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ
“And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” (54:17)
This verse is repeated four times in the Surah — verses 17, 22, 32, and 40 — after the destruction of the past nations. This repetition is a powerful reminder of Allah's mercy:
1. Allah has made the Qur'an easy — for memorisation, reflection, and application
2. Its ease is for remembrance (dhikr) — the purpose is to bring the heart back to Allah
3. The question is a call — “so is there any who will remember?” — a direct invitation to every reader
4. Excuses are no more — no one can claim the Qur'an is too difficult
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it.” (Sahih Bukhari 5027). Ibn Kathir said: “Allah made the Qur'an easy to memorise, easy to understand, and easy to act upon — for anyone who sincerely turns to it.” This verse is a call to every Muslim to engage with the Qur'an — not just to recite it, but to remember it in the heart.
