How many Ayat does Surah Fussilat have?
Why is Surah Fussilat called "Explained in Detail"?
“Ha, Meem. [This is] a revelation from the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful — a Book whose verses have been detailed, an Arabic Qur'an for a people who know.” (41:1–3)
The word fussilat comes from the root fa-sa-la, which means:
• To detail — the verses are clearly explained and separated
• To distinguish — truth is separated from falsehood
• To clarify — the message is made clear for those who reflect
• To elaborate — every ruling, story, and warning is spelled out
The Surah is also known as Ha-Mim As-Sajdah — because it begins with the letters Ha-Meem (حم) and contains a sajdah verse (verse 37). Together, both names declare:
1. The Qur'an is a detailed Book — everything is explained
2. It calls for prostration — the response of the believer is humility before Allah
3. It is a mercy — sent from the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
What is the meaning of verse 34 of Surah Fussilat?
“And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.” (41:34)
This verse teaches:
• Good and evil are not equal — the believer's way is not the way of the disbeliever
• Repel evil with good — the divine command is to respond to harm with kindness
• The enemy becomes a friend — the miraculous result of repelling evil with good
• This is the highest character — the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “I was sent to perfect good character.” (Musnad Ahmad 8952)
Ibn Kathir said: “This verse is one of the greatest motivations for good character. Whoever treats those who harm him with kindness will find that his enemy becomes his closest friend.” The verse 35 continues: “But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].” This quality is only for the patient and those with great portion.
