Frequently Asked Questions about Surah Al-Ma'idah

Everything you need to know about the Surah of Covenant and Justice

What are the benefits of reading Surah Al-Ma'idah?
Surah Al-Ma'idah is one of the most important Surahs of the Qur'an and is the last of the great Madinan Surahs. Its benefits include:

• Establishes the fulfilment of covenants — the very first verse commands believers to honour their contracts (verse 1)
• Completes the religion — verse 3 declares the perfection of Islam on the day of Arafah during the Farewell Pilgrimage
• Commands justice — verse 8 commands believers to stand firmly for Allah, even against themselves
• Prohibits intoxicants and gambling — verses 90–91 clearly forbid khamr (alcohol), gambling, idolatry, and fortune-telling
• Establishes the sanctity of life — verse 32 declares that saving one life is like saving all of humanity
• Corrects false doctrines — clarifies the true nature of Isa (Jesus), affirming he was a prophet, not divine
• Contains the last verses revealed — some of the final Qur'anic revelations are found in this Surah

Reciting it daily builds a strong sense of justice, honesty, and reverence for Allah's commands.
When is the best time to recite Surah Al-Ma'idah?
Surah Al-Ma'idah may be recited at any time of the day or night. Common practices include:

• Daily recitation in portions — as part of a complete Qur'an reading schedule (Juz 6–7)
• After Fajr — many Muslims recite it in the mornings for barakah and reflection
• Before sleep — as part of a nightly recitation routine
• On Fridays — especially recommended for increased reward
• When studying Islamic rulings — it is a primary source for halal/haram and justice laws

The key is consistency — even a few ayat daily with reflection brings deep spiritual growth and strengthens obedience to Allah.

How many Ayat does Surah Al-Ma'idah have?
Surah Al-Ma'idah contains exactly 120 Ayat. It is the 5th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Madinan (Madani), and it spans Juz 6 and 7. It was among the last Surahs to be revealed to the Prophet (ﷺ) and contains many of the final rulings of Islam.
Why is Surah Al-Ma'idah called "The Table Spread"?
The Surah is named Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread) after the request of the disciples of Isa (Jesus) in verses 112–114, when they asked him:

“Can your Lord send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven?”

Isa prayed to Allah, and Allah sent down a table of food as a sign and a blessing. This event is a lesson about divine provision and the miracles granted to Isa. The Surah uses this story to address the People of the Book — reminding them of Allah's favors and correcting their deviations from the true message of Isa (peace be upon him).
What is the meaning of verse 3 — "This day I have perfected your religion"?
Verse 3 is one of the most significant verses in the Qur'an:

الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا

“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion.”

This verse was revealed on the day of Arafah during the Farewell Pilgrimage — the last year of the Prophet's life. It announces:
• The religion of Islam is now complete — no new rulings will come
• Allah's favor upon the believers is now full
• Islam is the final, approved religion for humanity

A Jewish man once told Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) that if this verse had been revealed to them, they would have taken that day as a festival. Umar replied: “I know the day and the place it was revealed — it was on the day of Arafah, a Friday.” (Sahih Bukhari 45)
What does verse 32 say about the sanctity of life?
Verse 32 contains one of the most famous principles in the entire Qur'an:

“Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land — it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one — it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.”

This verse establishes:
• The sanctity of every human life — killing one person is like killing all of humanity
• The value of saving life — saving one person is like saving all of humanity
• Justice and mercy together — capital punishment is permitted only for murder or corruption in the land

This principle was later adopted into many legal systems worldwide. It is one of the Qur'an's greatest declarations of the value of human life.
What does Surah Al-Ma'idah say about intoxicants and gambling?
Verses 90–91 contain the final and clearest prohibition of intoxicants and gambling:

“O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.”

This verse:
• Calls intoxicants (khamr), gambling (maysir), idol sacrifices, and fortune-telling “defilement from the work of Satan”
• Commands believers to completely avoid them — not just reduce or moderate
• Explains that Satan uses them to cause enmity and hatred between Muslims
• Explains they prevent remembrance of Allah and prayer

This was the final stage of a gradual prohibition — and it established the complete and permanent ban on alcohol and gambling in Islam.
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah Al-Ma'idah in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation and reflection on its deep rulings, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “32” for the sanctity of life verse, or “90” for the prohibition of intoxicants)
• English keyword (e.g. “justice” or “covenant”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
