How many Ayat does Surah Al-Ahqaf have?
Surah Al-Ahqaf contains exactly 35 Ayat. It is the 46th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Meccan (Makki), and it is located entirely in Juz 26. It is the last of the seven Surahs that begin with the disjoined letters Ha Meem (حم) — the Ha-Meem Surahs — and it contains some of the most beloved verses on parents and patience.
Why is Surah Al-Ahqaf called "The Sand Dunes"?
The Surah is named Al-Ahqaf (The Sand Dunes) after verse 21:

“And mention, [O Muhammad], the brother of 'Ad, when he warned his people in the [region of] al-Ahqaf — and warners had already passed on before him and after him — [saying]: Do not worship except Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day.” (46:21)

The word al-ahqaf means sand dunes or twisted sand mountains. It refers to the region in southern Arabia (modern-day Yemen/Oman) where the ancient people of 'Ad lived. They were a powerful civilisation blessed with wealth and power, but they rejected Prophet Hud (AS) and were destroyed by a violent, barren wind that Allah sent upon them for eight days and seven nights:

“Then when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said: This is a cloud bringing us rain! Rather, it is that for which you were impatient: a wind, within it a painful punishment, destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellings.” (46:24–25)

The name honours this story and the lesson: no nation, no matter how powerful, can escape Allah's judgment.
What is the meaning of verse 15 of Surah Al-Ahqaf?
Verse 15 is one of the most beautiful verses on kindness to parents in the Qur'an:

“And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says: My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.” (46:15)

This verse teaches:
1. Kindness to parents is a divine command — “We have enjoined upon man”
2. The mother's sacrifice is emphasized — carrying with hardship, giving birth with hardship, nursing for thirty months
3. The age of forty is a milestone — when a person reaches full maturity and should turn to Allah with gratitude
4. Gratitude for blessings and parents — the du'a mentions both
5. The du'a for righteous offspring — the mature believer prays for the next generation
6. Sincere repentance and submission — the closing words of the du'a

This is one of the most comprehensive verses on family, gratitude, and maturity in the Qur'an — a model for every believer reaching the age of forty.
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah Al-Ahqaf in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation, kindness to parents, and the special virtue of the Ha-Meem Surahs, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “1” for the opening, “15” for the parents verse, “21” for 'Ad, or “29” for the jinn story)
• English keyword (e.g. “parents” or “jinn”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
