Surah At-Tawbah contains exactly 129 Ayat. It is the 9th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Madinan (Madani), and it spans Juz 10 and 11. It is one of the last Surahs to be revealed to the Prophet (ﷺ) and was among the final complete Surahs sent down.
Why does Surah At-Tawbah not begin with Bismillah?
Surah At-Tawbah is the only Surah of the Qur'an that does not begin with Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ). Several reasons are given by the scholars:
• The Prophet (ﷺ) did not dictate it — he did not command the scribes to write Bismillah at its beginning, so the Companions left it out
• Bismillah means security, and this Surah was revealed with the sword — Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) said: “The Bismillah conveys security, while this Surah was sent down with the sword (disavowal of treaties)”
• It may be part of Surah Al-Anfal — Uthman ibn Affan (RA) said the two Surahs are called “the two consorts” and were considered together, so Bismillah was not written between them
• It discloses the hypocrites — Ibn Juzayy called it Al-Fadihah (The Disgracer) because it exposes the secrets of the munafiqun
The Surah is called both At-Tawbah (Repentance) and Al-Bara'ah (Disavowal/Release) — the latter from its first word.
