How many Ayat does Surah Ad-Dukhan have?
Why is Surah Ad-Dukhan called "The Smoke"?
“Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke.” (44:10)
The smoke is one of the signs of the Day of Judgment — a visible smoke that will cover the sky and cause distress to the disbelievers. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The Hour will not come until you see ten signs: the smoke, Dajjal, the Beast, the rising of the sun from the West, the descent of Isa son of Maryam, Ya'juj and Ma'juj, three landslides... and a fire that will emerge from Yemen.” (Sahih Muslim 2901)
The Surah teaches:
1. The smoke is a divine warning — it will cover the sky and bring pain
2. It calls people to repent — “Our Lord, remove from us the punishment; indeed, we will then believe” (44:12)
3. It reveals the deception of mankind — the disbelievers will seek relief but will not persist in faith
4. It is a reminder of Allah's mercy — the punishment will be removed as a trial, but most will return to disbelief
The name honours this great sign of the Day of Judgment.
What is the meaning of verse 3 of Surah Ad-Dukhan?
إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ
“Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].” (44:3)
This verse teaches:
• The Qur'an was revealed in a blessed night — the night of Laylatul Qadr
• That night is in the last ten nights of Ramadan — specifically the odd nights
• The blessing of the night — Laylatul Qadr is better than a thousand months
• The Qur'an is the greatest blessing — sent down as a warning and a mercy
Allah says in Surah Al-Qadr: “Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” (97:1–3)
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever stands [in prayer] during Laylatul Qadr out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih Bukhari 1901). This verse is the foundation of the honour of Ramadan and Laylatul Qadr.
