How many Ayat does Surah Az-Zukhruf have?
Why is Surah Az-Zukhruf called "The Ornaments of Gold"?
“And [their] ornaments [of gold]... That is [the enjoyment of] the worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.” (43:35)
The Surah teaches that:
• Gold ornaments are a worldly illusion — their beauty is temporary
• The disbelievers were deceived by wealth — they thought riches proved Allah's favour
• The Hereafter is better and everlasting — the true ornaments are the rewards of Paradise
• Wealth is a test, not a sign of piety — Allah gives both to the righteous and the wicked, but the final destination differs
The Surah also narrates the story of the golden calf (verses 51–56) that was made for the people of Musa — the prototype of all material deception. It teaches that gold and ornaments cannot substitute for faith, and that the true wealth is with Allah in the Hereafter.
What is the meaning of verses 13–14 of Surah Az-Zukhruf?
“So that you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them, and say: Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it. And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return.” (43:13–14)
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite this du'a when mounting any animal or vehicle — and today we recite it when boarding a car, bus, train, plane, or ship. It contains three profound lessons:
1. Gratitude for the means of travel — without Allah's subjecting them, we could never control them
2. Tasbih — Exalted is He — acknowledging Allah's greatness
3. Return to Allah — every journey reminds us of the final journey to our Lord
The du'a is: “Subhana alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun.” Reciting it brings protection and barakah to every journey.
