How many Ayat does Surah Al-Ahzab have?
Why is Surah Al-Ahzab called "The Combined Forces"?
“When they came upon you from above you and from below you, and when eyes grew wild and hearts reached to the throats, and you were imagining about Allah various thoughts.” (33:10)
The siege lasted about a month. The Muslims dug a trench around Madinah for defence. The Confederates were unable to cross, and Allah sent a violent storm that scattered their camps, terrified their horses, and forced them to retreat:
“O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allah upon you when armies came to [attack] you and We sent upon them a wind and armies [of angels] you did not see. And ever is Allah, of what you do, Seeing.” (33:9)
The Surah uses this event to teach: Allah's protection is certain for the believers, and the hypocrites are exposed during times of trial. It also reformulates the social structure of Madinah — regulating adoption, marriage, and family law.
What is the meaning of verse 56 of Surah Al-Ahzab?
“Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.” (33:56)
This verse teaches:
• Allah Himself sends blessings on the Prophet (ﷺ) — a unique honour given to no one else
• The angels also send blessings — a model for the believers
• Believers must send blessings — the command is direct and universal
• Both Salat (blessing) and Salam (peace) are required — a complete honour
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him.” (Sahih Muslim 408)
The verse is one of the most recited verses in the daily life of a Muslim — recited in prayer (in the Tashahhud), in the Jumu'ah khutbah, in du'a, and in daily remembrance. Sending Salawat upon the Prophet (ﷺ) is a sign of love, gratitude, and spiritual connection.
What are the main themes of Surah Al-Ahzab?
• The command to obey Allah and not the disbelievers — verses 1–3
• The rejection of pre-Islamic customs of adoption — verses 4–6 — “Call them by their fathers”
• The covenant with the prophets — verses 7–8
• The Battle of the Trench — verses 9–27 — the siege, the hypocrites, and the divine deliverance
• The honour of the Prophet's wives — verses 28–34 — the mothers of the believers
• The command to remember Allah — verses 35–36 — the qualities of the believing men and women
• The laws of inheritance and marriage — verses 37–52
• The etiquette of the Prophet's household — verses 53–55
• The verse of Salawat — verse 56
• The warning to the hypocrites — verses 57–62
• The Amana verse — verse 72 — “We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth...”
The Surah teaches that the Muslim community must be built on Tawheed, obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and firmness in trials.
