Why is Surah As-Sajdah called "The Prostration"?
“Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.” (32:15)
This verse teaches:
• Prostration is a mark of true faith — the believer responds to the verses of Allah with humility
• Prostration is not just physical — it is the humility of the heart before Allah
• The believers are not arrogant — they do not consider themselves above worship
• Prostration brings closeness to Allah — the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The servant is closest to his Lord when he is in prostration, so supplicate more in it.” (Sahih Muslim 482)
The Surah is one of the fifteen Surahs containing a sajdah verse, and its name honours the central quality of the true believer — falling in prostration before Allah. When you reach verse 15 while reciting, it is recommended (Sunnah) to prostrate.
What are the qualities of true believers in Surah As-Sajdah?
• Verse 15 — They fall in prostration when reminded of the verses of Allah, exalt Him with praise, and are not arrogant
• Verse 16 — Their sides forsake their beds (they wake for night prayer), calling upon Allah in fear and hope, and they spend from what Allah has provided them
• Verse 17 — “And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said about verse 17: “Allah said: I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has imagined.” (Sahih Bukhari 4779)
These qualities are:
1. Humility in worship — prostration and praise
2. Night prayer — forsaking the bed for Allah
3. Fear and hope together — balancing awe of Allah's punishment and hope for His mercy
4. Spending in charity — giving from what Allah has provided
Taken together, these verses form a complete picture of the true believer whose heart is alive with faith, whose nights are spent in worship, and whose wealth is used in the way of Allah.
