How many Ayat does Surah Al-Hajj have?
Why is Surah Al-Hajj called "The Pilgrimage"?
“And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass.” (22:27)
The Surah establishes:
• The building of the Kaaba by Ibrahim and Isma'il — the first house of worship on earth (verses 26–29)
• The call to Hajj — every able Muslim must make the pilgrimage at least once
• The rites of Hajj — the sacrifice, the shaving, the circling of the Kaaba
• The true purpose of sacrifice — verse 37 declares that it is not the meat or blood that reaches Allah, but the taqwa (piety) of the sacrificer
The name honours the fifth pillar of Islam and reminds the believer that Hajj is not merely a physical journey but a spiritual return to the house of Allah.
What is the meaning of verse 46 of Surah Al-Hajj?
“Have they not traveled through the land and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not the eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.” (22:46)
This verse teaches:
• True blindness is of the heart — physical sight means nothing if the heart cannot see the truth
• Travel and reflection open the heart — looking at the ruins of past nations awakens spiritual perception
• The heart is the seat of understanding — not the eyes or the ears, but the heart that reasons and reflects
• The disbelievers are spiritually blind — they see the signs of Allah but their hearts cannot perceive them
Ibn al-Qayyim said: “Whoever's heart is blind will not benefit from the light of the sun, and whoever's heart sees will not be harmed by the darkness of the night.” The verse is a reminder that the greatest blessing is not physical sight but spiritual insight.
What are the main themes of Surah Al-Hajj?
• The terror of the Day of Judgment — verses 1–2 describe the earthquake of the Hour and the state of humanity on that Day
• The two disputers about Allah — verses 3–10 refute those who argue against Allah without knowledge
• The reality of faith — verses 11–13 warn against worshipping Allah on a "brink" — faith that wavers in trial
• The Hereafter and its signs — verses 5–7 describe the stages of human creation as proof of resurrection
• The Hajj and the Kaaba — verses 26–37 narrate Ibrahim's building of the Kaaba and the rites of Hajj
• The true meaning of sacrifice — verse 37 declares that it is taqwa, not blood or meat, that reaches Allah
• Permission to fight in self-defence — verses 39–40 establish the principle of defensive jihad
• The honour of the believers — verses 40–41 promise victory for those who are wronged
• The Day of Judgment and its terrors — verses 50–57 describe the final destination of believers and disbelievers
• The signs of Allah in creation — verses 61–66 describe the alternation of day and night, the rain, and the earth's revival
• The closing command of Istiqamah — verse 78 commands striving for Allah with the striving due to Him
The Surah teaches that faith must be strong, sacrifice must be sincere, and the fear of Allah must govern every aspect of a believer's life.
