How many Ayat does Surah Al-Hijr have?
Why is Surah Al-Hijr called "The Rocky Tract"?
“And certainly did the companions of Al-Hijr deny the messengers.” (15:80)
Al-Hijr was a rocky region between Hijaz and Syria, where the people of Thamud carved their homes into the mountains. They were a powerful nation — wealthy, skilled in architecture, and blessed with resources — yet they rejected Prophet Salih (AS) and were destroyed by a divine punishment. Their ruined homes remained as a sign for later generations:
“And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you do not provide.” (15:20)
The name is a reminder that power, wealth, and civilization mean nothing without faith in Allah.
What is the meaning of verse 9 of Surah Al-Hijr?
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an, and indeed, We will be its Guardian.” (15:9)
This verse contains a divine promise that:
• The Qur'an will never be corrupted — unlike the previous scriptures (Torah, Gospel), which were altered by their followers, the Qur'an is directly under Allah's protection
• The preservation is by Allah Himself — no human being, no tyrant, and no group can ever destroy or change the Qur'an
• The Qur'an is the final revelation — since there will be no new prophets after Muhammad (ﷺ), the Book must remain intact until the Day of Judgment
• The promise includes both words and meaning — not just the text but its authentic interpretation
This verse is a source of unshakeable confidence for every Muslim. Imam Malik (RA) said: “The Qur'an is the only Book that Allah Himself guarantees to protect. Every other Book was entrusted to its people, and they lost it.”
What is the story of Iblis in Surah Al-Hijr?
• Allah created Adam from clay — “And We created man from a sounding clay, from black altered mud” (15:26)
• Allah commanded the angels to prostrate — “So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration” (15:29)
• All the angels prostrated except Iblis — “Except Iblis. He refused to be with those who prostrated” (15:31)
• Iblis's arrogant excuse — “I am not one to prostrate to a man whom You created from a sounding clay, from black altered mud” (15:33)
• Allah cursed and expelled him — “Then get out of it, for indeed you are cursed” (15:34–35)
• Iblis asked for respite until Judgment Day — granted, so that he could mislead humanity as a test
• Iblis's vow to mislead all — “Except Your chosen servants among them” (15:40)
The story teaches three things: (1) arrogance destroys, (2) Iblis is the eternal enemy of humanity, and (3) Allah's sincere servants are protected from his deception.
