How many Ayat does Surah Al-Isra have?
Why is Surah Al-Isra called "The Night Journey"?
“Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” (17:1)
This journey, known as Isra and Mi'raj, took place in one night. The Prophet (ﷺ) was transported:
• From the Kaaba in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem (the Isra)
• Then ascended through the seven heavens to the presence of Allah (the Mi'raj)
• During this journey, the five daily prayers were ordained
• He met the previous prophets — Adam, Isa, Yahya, Yusuf, Idris, Harun, Musa, and Ibrahim (peace be upon them)
The journey was a divine honour for the Prophet (ﷺ) after the Year of Sorrow, and it established the sanctity of Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem as one of the three sacred mosques of Islam.
What is the meaning of verse 82 of Surah Al-Isra?
“And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.” (17:82)
This verse teaches:
• The Qur'an is Shifa (healing) — for the body, the soul, the heart, and the mind
• The healing is conditional on faith — it heals the believers specifically, those who approach it with sincerity
• The Qur'an is Rahmah (mercy) — it brings Allah's mercy, forgiveness, and protection
• For the disbelievers it increases loss — not because the Qur'an harms, but because their rejection compounds their loss
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim said: “The Qur'an is the complete healing for all diseases of the heart and body — but only when the heart approaches it with faith, love, and submission.” Reciting it with understanding is one of the greatest forms of ruqyah (healing).

3. Give to relatives, the poor, and the traveler — but do not waste (verse 26)
4. Do not be miserly or extravagant — be balanced (verses 29)

9. Give full measure and weight in justice — honesty in trade (verse 35)
10. Do not follow what you have no knowledge of — verify and be truthful (verse 36)
The passage closes with the command: “And do not walk upon the earth exultantly” (verse 37) — teaching humility. Together these commandments form the moral foundation of Islamic society.
