✦ Virtue of Surah Maryam: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites Surah Maryam, Allah will grant him ten good deeds for every person who called Allah a son, and for every person who did not, and he will be among those who are safe from the whispers of Satan.” (Reported in Thawab al-A'mal). It is also narrated that whoever recites it and memorises it will be among the companions of Isa (AS) on the Day of Judgment. Surah Maryam is one of the most beautiful and moving Surahs of the Qur'an — it was revealed during the Meccan persecution and was recited by Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (RA) before the Christian king Negus of Abyssinia, who wept upon hearing it and said: “This and what Isa brought come from the same lamp.”

How many Ayat does Surah Maryam have?
Surah Maryam contains exactly 98 Ayat. It is the 19th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Meccan (Makki), and it is located entirely in Juz 16. It is one of the eleven Surahs that begin with the disjoined letters (Kaf Ha Ya Ain Sad) and it is the only Surah in the Qur'an named after a woman.
Why is Surah Maryam named after Mary?
The Surah is named Maryam (Mary) because she is the central figure of the Surah, and it contains her extraordinary story in detail (verses 16–40). Maryam is unique in the entire Qur'an because:

• She is the only woman named by name in the Qur'an — no other woman is mentioned directly by name
• She has an entire Surah named after her — no other woman has this honour
• She is mentioned 34 times in the Qur'an — more than any other woman
• She was chosen above all women — verse 42 of Surah Al-Imran declares her chosen above the women of all worlds
• She is a model of purity, worship, and trust in Allah — she dedicated her life to worship and accepted Allah's decree with patience
• Her son Isa (AS) is one of the greatest prophets — his miraculous birth without a father is narrated in this Surah

The Surah uses her story to teach chastity, worship, patience, and complete trust in Allah.
What is the meaning of verse 96 of Surah Maryam?
Verse 96 is one of the most beautiful verses about divine love in the Qur'an:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ سَيَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وُدًّا

“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds — the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.” (19:96)

This verse teaches:
• Allah Himself places love in the hearts — for those who have faith and do good deeds
• The love is from Ar-Rahman — from the Most Merciful, the source of all love
• It is unconditional and universal — Allah makes them beloved not only to Himself but to all of creation — the angels, the prophets, and the believers
• Faith and good deeds together — both are required. Faith without deeds is incomplete, and deeds without faith are void

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “When Allah loves a servant, He calls Jibreel and says: ‘I love so-and-so, so love him.’ Then Jibreel loves him, and he calls out to the inhabitants of the heavens: ‘Allah loves so-and-so, so love him.’ Then the inhabitants of the heavens love him, and he is then granted acceptance upon the earth.” (Sahih Bukhari 3209 · Sahih Muslim 2637)
What are the main stories in Surah Maryam?
Surah Maryam narrates the stories of seven prophets and their families:

• Zakariyya (AS) — verses 2–11. An old man whose wife was barren, he called upon Allah privately and was granted a son, Yahya, a sign and a mercy
• Yahya (AS) — verses 12–15. Born miraculously to aged parents, he was given wisdom as a child, purity, and devotion to Allah
• Maryam (AS) — verses 16–35. Her seclusion in the eastern chamber, the visit of Jibreel, the miraculous conception, the birth of Isa beneath a palm tree, and her return with the newborn who spoke in the cradle
• Isa (AS) — verses 29–36. He spoke as an infant, declared his prophethood, and honoured his mother
• Ibrahim (AS) — verses 41–50. His gentle da'wah to his father, his separation from his idolatrous people, and the gift of Ishaq and Ya'qub
• Musa (AS), Harun (AS), Isma'il (AS), Idris (AS) — verses 51–57. Brief mentions of their virtues and stations

Each story is a lesson in patience, trust in Allah, and the reward of the sincere. The Surah moves from one prophet to another, showing the unbroken chain of Tawheed from Adam to Muhammad (ﷺ).
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah Maryam in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation, protection from Satan's whispers, and the rewards mentioned in the narrations, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “16” for Maryam's story, or “96” for the love verse)
• English keyword (e.g. “Maryam” or “palm”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
