How many Ayat does Surah Al-Mumtahanah have?
Why is Surah Al-Mumtahanah called "She That Is To Be Examined"?
“O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them. Allah is most knowing as to their faith. And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers.” (60:10)
The context is after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, when Muslim women began migrating from Makkah to Madinah. The disbelievers of Makkah objected, citing the treaty's terms. Allah revealed this verse, establishing that:
1. Faith is the measure — Muslim women who migrate for their faith are to be examined and protected, not returned
2. The disbelievers have no authority over believing women — the treaty did not cover this case
3. Islam honours women — their faith was protected, unlike other treaties that treated women as property
4. The disbelievers were to be compensated — the Muslims were commanded to return the mahr to the disbelievers, and vice versa
The Surah also contains verse 12 — the famous pledge of the women (bay'at an-nisa) — where the Prophet (ﷺ) accepted the pledge of the believing women to avoid shirk, theft, adultery, slander, and disobedience. The name honours this remarkable protection of women's faith and rights in Islam.
What is the meaning of verse 8 of Surah Al-Mumtahanah?
“Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes — from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.” (60:8)
This verse establishes the balance in Muslim–non-Muslim relations:
1. Kindness is commanded — “Allah does not forbid you... from being righteous toward them”
2. Justice is required — “and acting justly toward them” — no oppression, no injustice
3. Peaceful non-Muslims are to be treated well — those who do not fight Muslims for their faith
4. Allah loves the just — “Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly”
This verse contrasts with verse 9, which prohibits alliance with those who fight Muslims. Together, they teach: kindness to peaceful non-Muslims, firmness against those who attack. The Prophet (ﷺ) demonstrated this — he accepted gifts from non-Muslims, visited the sick among them, and commanded his Companions to treat captives with kindness. This verse is often cited as evidence that Islam encourages peaceful and just coexistence with people of all faiths.
