What is the meaning of verse 24 of Surah Al-Qasas?
رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ
“My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.” (28:24)
This du'a contains several profound lessons:
• Complete reliance on Allah — Musa had nothing and admitted his complete need for Allah's help
• Humility — despite being a prophet and a strong man, he acknowledged his poverty before Allah
• Trust in Allah's provision — “whatever good You send down” — not specifying what or how, but trusting Allah's wisdom
• The answer to this du'a — immediately after this du'a, Allah provided him with shelter, work, food, and a righteous wife
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The du'a of Musa — My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me — is one of the most beautiful du'as of the Qur'an.” (Reported in al-Tabarani). It is especially recommended for those seeking provision, employment, or marriage.
What is the story of Qarun in Surah Al-Qasas?
• His immense wealth — “We had given him of treasures, the keys to which would burden a company of strong men” (28:76)
• His people's advice — “Do not exult; indeed, Allah does not like those who exult. And seek the home of the Hereafter by what Allah has given you” (28:76–77)
• Qarun's arrogant reply — “I was only given it because of knowledge I have” (28:78)
• His boastful display — “He came out before his people in his adornment” (28:79)
• His destruction — “We caused the earth to swallow him and his home. And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allah” (28:81)
The story of Qarun teaches:
• Wealth is a test — not a sign of Allah's pleasure
• Arrogance destroys — Qarun's claim that his wealth came from his own knowledge led to his destruction
• Allah's punishment is swift — the earth swallowed him and his home in an instant
• Only Allah's rewards last — “The reward of Allah is better for those who believe and do righteous deeds” (28:80)
The Qur'an calls Qarun one of the three great tyrants — along with Pharaoh and Haman (29:39).
