How many Ayat does Surah An-Naml have?
Why is Surah An-Naml called "The Ant"?
“Until, when they came upon the valley of the ants, an ant said: O ants, enter your dwellings that you not be crushed by Solomon and his soldiers while they perceive not.” (27:18)
Sulayman heard the ant's warning and: “So [Solomon] smiled, amused at her speech, and said: My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve.” (27:19)
This story teaches several profound lessons:
• The ant's wisdom — even the smallest creature has been given wisdom by Allah
• Sulayman's humility — despite his immense power, he smiled at the ant's speech and thanked Allah
• Gratitude for blessings — Sulayman's prayer focuses on gratitude, not pride
• Allah's awareness of all creation — the ant's warning was heard by Sulayman, showing Allah's care for even the smallest of His creatures
The name honours this beautiful story of wisdom, humility, and gratitude.
What is the story of the Queen of Sheba in Surah An-Naml?
• The hoopoe's report (verses 20–26) — the hoopoe bird brings Sulayman news of a great queen in Sheba who worships the sun instead of Allah
• Sulayman's letter (verses 27–31) — Sulayman sends a letter with the hoopoe, beginning with the Bismillah, calling her to Islam
• The Queen's consultation (verses 32–35) — she consults her advisors, who want to fight. She wisely chooses to send a gift instead, saying: “Indeed, kings, when they enter a city, despoil it...”
• The throne's transportation (verses 38–42) — Sulayman asks for the throne to be brought before her arrival, and one with knowledge of the Book (identified by scholars as Asif ibn Barkhiya) brings it in the blink of an eye
• The Queen's arrival (verses 42–44) — she is asked about her throne, and she recognises it. She is then brought to a palace with a glass floor, which she mistakes for water. She realises the truth and declares: “My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I submit with Solomon to Allah, Lord of the worlds.” (27:44)
This story teaches: the wisdom of a leader who consults, the danger of worshipping creation instead of the Creator, and the beauty of sincere conversion to Islam.
What is the meaning of verse 30 of Surah An-Naml?
إِنَّهُ مِن سُلَيْمَانَ وَإِنَّهُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
“Indeed, it is from Solomon, and indeed, it reads: In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.” (27:30)
This verse teaches:
• Sulayman began his letter with the Bismillah — showing that every important matter should begin with the name of Allah
• The Bismillah is a declaration of Tawheed — the letter was not a royal decree but a call to worship Allah alone
• Sulayman's wisdom — even a letter to the most powerful queen begins with the name of Allah
• The Bismillah is sacred — it is honoured in the Qur'an by appearing within a verse, not just at the beginning of Surahs
The verse is often cited by scholars as evidence for the importance of beginning every important action with “Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim.”
