✦ Virtue of Surah Ar-Rum: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites Surah Ar-Rum, Allah will grant him ten good deeds for every angel that glorifies Allah between the heavens and the earth, and he will be among those who fulfil the covenant of Allah.” (Reported in Thawab al-A'mal). It is also narrated that whoever recites it on the night of the 23rd of Ramadan will be among the people of Paradise. Surah Ar-Rum is called “The Romans” because it opens with a prophecy about the defeat and later victory of the Romans (Byzantines) — a prophecy that was fulfilled exactly as Allah declared within seven years, proving the truth of the Qur'an. It also contains one of the most beloved verses about marriage (30:21) and the famous verse about human diversity (30:22).

How many Ayat does Surah Ar-Rum have?
Surah Ar-Rum contains exactly 60 Ayat. It is the 30th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Meccan (Makki), and it is located entirely in Juz 21. It is one of the eleven Surahs that begin with the disjoined letters (Alif Lam Meem) and it is famous for its opening prophecy about the Romans.
What is the prophecy in Surah Ar-Rum?
Verses 1–6 of Surah Ar-Rum contain one of the most remarkable prophecies in the Qur'an — a divine prediction about the outcome of the war between the Romans (Byzantines) and the Persians (Sasanians):

“Alif, Lam, Meem. The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome within three to nine years. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And that day the believers will rejoice in the victory of Allah. He gives victory to whom He wills, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.” (30:1–5)

The historical context:
• The Romans were defeated by the Persians in 614–619 CE — around the time of the Prophet's early mission
• The disbelievers of Makkah rejoiced — because the Persians were idolaters like them, and the Romans were People of the Book
• Allah revealed this prophecy — the Romans would defeat the Persians within 3–9 years
• The prophecy was fulfilled exactly — in 622 CE, the Romans defeated the Persians at the Battle of Nineveh
• On that same day, the Muslims won at Badr — the believers rejoiced in both victories

Abu Bakr (RA) bet with Ubayy ibn Khalaf on this prophecy, and it was fulfilled exactly as Allah declared. The prophecy is one of the clearest proofs of the divine origin of the Qur'an.
What is the meaning of verse 21 of Surah Ar-Rum?
Verse 21 is one of the most beloved verses about marriage in the Qur'an:

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” (30:21)

This verse contains four profound lessons:
1. Marriage is a sign of Allah — one of His greatest signs, alongside the creation of the heavens and the earth
2. Mates are created from among ourselves — the spouse is not foreign but from the same human family
3. The purpose is tranquillity (sakan) — marriage is not just for passion but for peace and stability
4. Allah places mawaddah and rahmah — Mawaddah is love and affection, and rahmah is mercy and compassion. Both are gifts from Allah, not earned by spouses alone

The verse is often recited in marriage ceremonies and is a foundation of the Islamic understanding of marriage.
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah Ar-Rum in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation, the reward for every angel between heaven and earth, and the special virtue of the 23rd night of Ramadan, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “2” for the Roman prophecy, “21” for the marriage verse, or “30” for the natural religion verse)
• English keyword (e.g. “Romans” or “mates”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
