How many Ayat does Surah Luqman have?
Surah Luqman contains exactly 34 Ayat. It is the 31st Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Meccan (Makki), and it is located entirely in Juz 21. It is one of the eleven Surahs that begin with the disjoined letters (Alif Lam Meem) and it is named after Luqman the Wise — a righteous man whose wisdom is immortalised in the Qur'an.
Who was Luqman the Wise?
Luqman (AS) was a righteous man of great wisdom — not a prophet, according to the majority of scholars, but a wise servant of Allah whose wisdom is immortalised in the Qur'an. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Luqman was not a prophet, but he was a righteous servant of Allah who used to reflect deeply, had strong certainty in faith, loved Allah, and was beloved to Allah.” (Reported in Musnad Ahmad and others)

Tradition describes him as:
• A Nubian or Abyssinian man — dark-skinned, with a humble appearance
• A shepherd or carpenter — he worked with his hands
• Renowned for his wisdom — people came to him from far and wide for advice
• Offered prophethood — but he declined and remained a wise advisor

The Qur'an immortalises his advice to his son — a timeless teaching that parents of every generation should study. Ibn Kathir said: “The wisdom of Luqman is a treasure of the Qur'an — every parent should teach it to their children.”
What are the ten commandments of Luqman to his son?
Verses 13–19 of Surah Luqman contain the timeless advice of Luqman to his son — often called the ten commandments of parental wisdom:

1. Do not associate anything with Allah — “O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association with Him is a great injustice.” (verse 13)
2. Be kind to your parents — “And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents.” (verse 14)
3. Follow only the path of the believers — “But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them.” (verse 15)
4. Know that Allah sees everything — “O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth.” (verse 16)
5. Establish prayer — “O my son, establish prayer.” (verse 17)
6. Enjoin what is right — “And enjoin what is right.” (verse 17)
7. Forbid what is wrong — “And forbid what is wrong.” (verse 17)
8. Be patient in trials — “And be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.” (verse 17)
9. Do not be arrogant — “And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly.” (verse 18)
10. Be moderate and speak gently — “And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys.” (verse 19)

Together, these ten commandments cover belief, family, worship, morality, and social character — a complete framework for Islamic upbringing.
What is the meaning of verse 34 of Surah Luqman?
Verse 34 is the closing verse of Surah Luqman and contains the famous five keys of the unseen — five things that only Allah knows:

“Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.” (31:34)

The five keys of the unseen are:
1. Knowledge of the Hour — when the Day of Judgment will occur
2. The sending down of rain — the exact time and place of rainfall
3. What is in the wombs — the complete knowledge of the unborn child
4. What a soul will earn tomorrow — the future actions and provisions of every person
5. Where a soul will die — the exact place of every person's death

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The keys of the unseen are five — no one knows them but Allah.” (Sahih Bukhari 4697). This verse is a powerful reminder of the limits of human knowledge and the greatness of Allah's knowledge.
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah Luqman in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation, Luqman's companionship on Judgment Day, and the rewards mentioned in the narrations, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “13” for the first advice, “18” for the humility verse, or “34” for the five keys of the unseen)
• English keyword (e.g. “Luqman” or “parents”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
