Everything you need to know about the Surah of Steadfastness

What are the benefits of reading Surah Hud?
Surah Hud is one of the greatest Meccan Surahs and carries unique virtue. Its benefits include:

• Revealed during the Year of Sorrow — it was revealed in the hardest year of the Prophet's life (after the death of Khadijah and Abu Talib), as a source of strength and consolation
• The Prophet (ﷺ) said it made him grey — because of its heavy commands, especially verse 112 (steadfastness upon the truth)
• Recommended for Friday recitation — the Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged reciting it on Fridays
• Teaches unwavering steadfastness — the central theme is remaining firm upon Tawheed despite trials
• Narrates the stories of seven prophets — Nuh, Hud, Salih, Ibrahim, Lut, Shu'ayb, and Musa (peace be upon them)
• Warns against arrogance and disobedience — each prophet's people were destroyed for rejecting the truth
• Demonstrates Allah's justice and mercy — the believers were saved while the disbelievers were destroyed

Reciting it daily builds steadfastness, patience, and firmness upon the truth.
When is the best time to recite Surah Hud?
Surah Hud may be recited at any time of the day or night. Common practices include:

• On Fridays — the Prophet (ﷺ) specifically recommended reciting it on Fridays
• During trials and hardship — the Surah was revealed in the Year of Sorrow and is a source of strength
• After Fajr — many Muslims recite it in the mornings for barakah and firmness of faith
• Daily recitation in portions — as part of a complete Qur'an reading schedule (Juz 11–12)
• Before sleep — as part of a nightly recitation routine
• When feeling weak in faith — the repeated theme of steadfastness revives the heart

The key is consistency — even a few ayat daily with reflection brings deep spiritual growth.

How many Ayat does Surah Hud have?
Surah Hud contains exactly 123 Ayat. It is the 11th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Meccan (Makki), and it spans Juz 11 and 12. It is one of the eleven Surahs that begin with the disjoined letters (Alif Lam Ra) and was revealed during the middle Meccan period.
Why did Surah Hud make the Prophet (ﷺ) grey?
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Surah Hud and its sisters have made me grey.” (Tirmidhi 3297). Scholars explain that this was primarily because of verse 112:

فَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ وَمَن تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا ۚ إِنَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ

“So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, and those who have turned back with you [to Allah], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.”

This verse commands complete, unwavering steadfastness upon the truth — a burden so heavy that Abu Bakr (RA) said: “It broke my back.” It requires: perfect consistency in belief, in worship, in character, and in obedience to Allah — without the slightest deviation. When the Prophet (ﷺ) was asked why this Surah made him grey, he replied: “It is because of the command in verse 112.” The command is universal — it applies to every Muslim of every generation.
Which prophets' stories are in Surah Hud?
Surah Hud contains the stories of seven prophets — the most of any single Meccan Surah:

• Nuh (AS) — verses 25–49. He called his people for 950 years, but they mocked him, so Allah drowned them in the flood while saving the believers in the ark.
• Hud (AS) — verses 50–60. The Surah's namesake. He was sent to the people of 'Ad, who were powerful and prosperous but arrogant. When they rejected him, Allah destroyed them with a barren wind.
• Salih (AS) — verses 61–68. Sent to the people of Thamud with the she-camel as a sign. They hamstrung her and were destroyed by an earthquake.
• Ibrahim (AS) — verses 69–76. The story of Ibrahim and the angels who came to him with news of Ishaq and the punishment of Lut's people.
• Lut (AS) — verses 77–83. Sent to the people of Sodom, who practiced immorality. When they rejected him, their cities were overturned and stones of clay rained upon them.
• Shu'ayb (AS) — verses 84–95. Sent to the people of Madyan, who cheated in weights and measures. When they refused to reform, they were destroyed.
• Musa (AS) — verses 96–99, 110. His confrontation with Pharaoh, the deliverance of Bani Israel, and Pharaoh's drowning in the sea.

Each story follows the same pattern: the prophet calls to Tawheed, the people reject out of arrogance, and Allah's judgment comes. Together they form a powerful lesson for the Prophet (ﷺ) and every believer: the disbelievers may seem powerful, but Allah's promise of victory and justice is certain.
What is the meaning of verse 112 of Surah Hud?
Verse 112 is the most important verse of the Surah and one of the most profound verses of the entire Qur'an:

“So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, and those who have turned back with you [to Allah], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.”

This verse commands four things:
1. Istiqamah (steadfastness) — remaining firmly on the straight path of Islam, without deviation
2. As commanded — following Allah's commands exactly, without adding or subtracting
3. Together — the community of believers must strive together, not in isolation
4. Without transgression — avoiding excess and extremism in religion

The Prophet (ﷺ) said this verse made him grey because of the immense weight of its command. It is the essence of Islamic life: a lifelong, unwavering commitment to the truth, no matter the circumstances.
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah Hud in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation and the special virtue of Friday recitation, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “112” for the verse of steadfastness, or “25” for the story of Nuh)
• English keyword (e.g. “steadfast” or “flood”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
