What is the story of Surah Yusuf in short?
The story of Prophet Yusuf (AS) unfolds in seven stages:
• The Dream (verses 4–18) — Young Yusuf tells his father Ya'qub (AS) of his dream of eleven stars, the sun, and the moon bowing to him. His brothers, jealous, throw him into a well. He is rescued by travellers and sold into slavery in Egypt.
• In Egypt (verses 19–35) — Yusuf grows up in the house of the Aziz (treasurer of Egypt). The Aziz's wife Zulaykha tries to seduce him. He refuses, saying: “I seek refuge in Allah” — and is falsely accused and imprisoned.
• In Prison (verses 36–42) — Yusuf calls to Tawheed and interprets dreams. He interprets the dreams of two fellow prisoners.
• The King's Dream (verses 43–57) — The king of Egypt sees a dream of seven fat cows eaten by seven lean ones. Yusuf interprets it, saving Egypt from famine. He is released and appointed treasurer.
• Reunion with Brothers (verses 58–93) — His brothers come to Egypt for food during the famine. After testing them, Yusuf reveals himself with the famous words: “I am Yusuf, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favored us.” (12:90)
• Forgiveness (verse 92) — Yusuf says: “No blame upon you today. May Allah forgive you; and He is the most Merciful of the merciful.”
• Reunion with Parents (verses 94–101) — He sends his shirt to his father Ya'qub, whose sight is restored. The family reunites in Egypt, and Yusuf prays: “My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous.” (12:101)
