How many Ayat does Surah Fatir have?
Why is Surah Fatir called "The Originator"?
“All praise is due to Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, [who] made the angels messengers having wings, two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.” (35:1)
The name Fatir comes from the root fa-ta-ra, which means:
• To originate — Allah is the Originator who created the heavens and the earth from nothing
• To split open — the same root is used for the splitting of the heavens and earth on the Day of Judgment
• To create without precedent — Fatir is the One who brings creation into existence without any prior model
The Surah uses this name to establish Tawheed — Allah alone is the Creator, the Originator, and the Sustainer. It also beautifully describes the angels as messengers with two, three, or four wings, and declares that Allah adds to His creation as He wills — a statement of His absolute freedom and power.
What is the meaning of verse 15 of Surah Fatir?
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنتُمُ الْفُقَرَاءُ إِلَى اللَّهِ ۖ وَاللَّهُ هُوَ الْغَنِيُّ الْحَمِيدُ
“O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.” (35:15)
This verse teaches:
• Complete human dependence — every human being, from the richest to the poorest, is in need of Allah at every moment
• Allah's absolute independence — He needs no one, while everyone needs Him
• Al-Ghani (The Free of Need) — one of the beautiful names of Allah, meaning He is rich above all need
• Al-Hamid (The Praiseworthy) — He is praised and worthy of all praise regardless of whether anyone praises Him
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “All of you are lost except those whom Allah guides; all of you are poor except those whom Allah enriches; all of you are sinners except those whom Allah forgives.” (Sahih Muslim 2577). This verse is a complete foundation of Tawheed and Islamic spirituality — the servant is nothing without Allah, and Allah is everything without the servant.
What are the main themes of Surah Fatir?
• Allah as the Originator — verse 1 — the creation of the heavens, the earth, and the angels
• Tawheed and Allah's absolute power — verses 2–4 — no one can withhold what Allah gives or give what He withholds
• Warning against the deception of Iblis — verses 5–6 — “Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy”
• The fate of the disbelievers — verses 7–14 — their deeds are like mirages, and their cries for help will not be answered
• The verse of human need — verse 15 — “O mankind, you are those in need of Allah”
• The two parties — believers and disbelievers — verses 19–23 — the blind and the seeing are not equal
• The honour of the righteous — verses 29–30 — those who recite the Book, pray, and spend in charity will have a great reward
• The reality of the Hereafter — verses 33–35 — the Paradise of the believers
• The disgrace of the arrogant — verses 36–43 — those who rejected the truth will cry out for a second chance, but it is too late
• The closing call — verse 45 — “And if Allah were to impose blame on the people for what they have earned, He would not leave upon the earth any creature.”
The Surah teaches that only Allah is truly Independent, and all creatures are in need of Him. The response to this truth is gratitude, worship, and turning away from the deception of the world.
