✦ Virtue of Surah As-Saffat: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites Surah As-Saffat, Allah will grant him ten good deeds for every jinn and every human who believed in the prophets, and he will be among those who are saved on the Day of Judgment.” (Reported in Thawab al-A'mal). The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite Surah As-Saffat in the Fajr prayer on Friday along with Surah Al-Insan (Sahih Muslim 880). Ibn Abbas (RA) said: “I recited Surah As-Saffat at the Fajr prayer with the Prophet (ﷺ) and the whole Surah was recited.” (Sahih Muslim 891). It contains the greatest story of sacrifice in human history — Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son — and the famous declaration: “Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe. And peace upon the messengers. And praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds.” (37:180–182).

How many Ayat does Surah As-Saffat have?
Surah As-Saffat contains exactly 182 Ayat. It is the 37th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Meccan (Makki), and it is located entirely in Juz 23. It is one of the longest Meccan Surahs and opens with the divine oath by the ranks of angels: “By those [angels] lined up in rows, and those who drive [the clouds], and those who recite the message.” (37:1–3)
Why is Surah As-Saffat called "Those Who Set the Ranks"?
The Surah is named As-Saffat (Those Who Set the Ranks / Those Lined Up in Rows) because it opens with the divine oath:

“By those [angels] lined up in rows, and those who drive [the clouds], and those who recite the message.” (37:1–3)

The name refers to the angels who stand in ranks before Allah — they are described in the Qur'an as standing in perfect rows, never disobeying Allah's commands, always glorifying Him. The Surah uses this image to teach:
• Order and discipline — the angels demonstrate perfect submission to Allah
• The honour of worship — the ranks of angels are the model of devotion
• Tawheed — Allah is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and the angels are His obedient servants
• The reality of Judgment — the same angels who stand in ranks will be witnesses on the Day of Judgment

The Surah also honours the prophets who are mentioned in it — Ibrahim, Ismail, Musa, Harun, Ilyas, Lut, and Yunus (peace be upon them) — who each demonstrated their own kind of submission to Allah's ranks. The Surah is one of the great Meccan Surahs for establishing Tawheed through the order of creation.
What is the story of Ibrahim's sacrifice in Surah As-Saffat?
Verses 99–113 of Surah As-Saffat narrate one of the most powerful stories in the Qur'an — the willingness of Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) as a test from Allah:

• Ibrahim's prayer for a son — “My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.” (37:100)
• Allah gives him a son — “So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.” (37:101)
• The test — “And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said: O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.” (37:102)
• Ismail's submission — “He said: O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.” (37:102)
• The ransom — “And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.” (37:107) — a ram was sent down from Paradise
• The reward — “And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations: Peace upon Abraham.” (37:108–109)

This story is the origin of the Islamic sacrifice (Qurbani) offered during Eid al-Adha and Hajj. It teaches:
1. Complete submission — Ibrahim was ready to sacrifice what he loved most for Allah
2. Teenage faith — Ismail's submission matched his father's
3. Allah's mercy — Allah does not burden us beyond our capacity and provides a way out
4. The reward of obedience — Ibrahim and Ismail are honoured forever in the Qur'an and in the hearts of all believers
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah As-Saffat in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation, Fajr on Friday, and the rewards mentioned in the narrations, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “1” for the opening oath, “102” for Ibrahim's sacrifice, or “180” for the closing praise)
• English keyword (e.g. “Ibrahim” or “sacrifice”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
