It is also narrated that whoever recites it every Friday, Allah will make it a light for him on the Day of Judgment. How many Ayat does Surah An-Nur have?
Surah An-Nur contains exactly 64 Ayat. It is the 24th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Madinan (Madani), and it is located entirely in Juz 18. It is one of the most comprehensive Surahs on social ethics and family law in the entire Qur'an.
Why is Surah An-Nur called "The Light"?
The Surah is named An-Nur (The Light) because of its famous verse 35 — the Verse of Light — one of the most profound verses in the Qur'an:

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills.” (24:35)

This verse teaches:
• Allah is the source of all light — physical, spiritual, and intellectual
• The likeness of Allah's light in the heart of a believer — the niche, the lamp, the glass, and the oil are all symbols of the heart receiving divine guidance
• Light upon light (Nur 'ala Nur) — the light of faith multiplied by the light of the Qur'an and the light of good deeds
• Allah guides whom He wills — guidance is a gift from Allah, not something earned by human effort alone

The Surah is called "The Light" because it illuminates the social, moral, and spiritual dimensions of Islamic life, and because it contains this greatest of all verses on divine guidance.
What is the story behind verse 11 of Surah An-Nur?
Verse 11 refers to the false accusation (al-ifk) against Aisha (RA), the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ), which occurred on the return from the expedition against Banu al-Mustaliq. A group of hypocrites, led by Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, spread a rumour against her honour. The rumour caused great pain to the Prophet (ﷺ), to Aisha (RA), and to the Muslim community.

After a month of distress, Allah revealed verses 11–20 of Surah An-Nur, declaring Aisha's innocence:

“Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather it is good for you...” (24:11)

The verses:
• Declared Aisha's innocence — she was pure and free from any wrongdoing
• Warned the believers — to verify news before spreading it
• Established the punishment for false accusation — eighty lashes for those who accuse without four witnesses
• Promised reward for the slandered — the false accusation became a means of Aisha's honour being raised

This story teaches that spreading rumours is a grave sin, and that Allah Himself defends the honour of the pure.
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah An-Nur in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation, the special reward for every believer, and the light on the Day of Judgment, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “35” for the Verse of Light, or “31” for the Modesty Verse)
• English keyword (e.g. “light” or “modesty”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
