Surah Al-Furqan contains exactly 77 Ayat. It is the 25th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Meccan (Makki), and it spans Juz 18 and 19. It is one of the greatest Meccan Surahs for refuting the objections against the Qur'an and the Prophet (ﷺ).

The Surah is named Al-Furqan (The Criterion) because the Qur'an itself is the divine standard that separates truth from falsehood, guidance from misguidance, and light from darkness. The very first verse declares:

“Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner.” (25:1)

The word Furqan means:
• The criterion of truth — the Qur'an distinguishes between right and wrong
• The separator — it separates the believers from the disbelievers
• The light of guidance — it illuminates the path to Allah
• The decisive proof — it is the final proof against those who reject the truth

The Surah uses this name to teach that every believer must use the Qur'an as the criterion for judging everything — beliefs, actions, relationships, and priorities. Whatever agrees with the Qur'an is truth, and whatever contradicts it is falsehood.

Verses 63–77 of Surah Al-Furqan contain one of the most beautiful portraits of the true believers of Allah. The servants of Ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful) are described with thirteen qualities:

1. Humble walking — “those who walk upon the earth easily” (verse 63)
2. Responding to ignorance with peace — “when the ignorant address them, they say: Peace” (verse 63)
3. Worshipping at night — “those who spend the night in worship of their Lord, prostrate and standing” (verse 64)
4. Fearing the Hellfire — “those who say: Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell” (verses 65–66)
5. Moderate in spending — “those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly” (verse 67)
6. Tawheed — “those who do not invoke any other deity with Allah” (verse 68)
7. Sanctity of life — “do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden” (verse 68)
8. Avoiding adultery — “do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse” (verse 68)
9. Sincere repentance — “except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous work” (verses 70–71)
10. Avoiding false testimony — “those who do not testify to falsehood” (verse 72)
11. Responding to vain talk with dignity — “when they pass by ill speech, they pass with dignity” (verse 72)
12. Reflecting on the Qur'an — “those who, when reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall upon them deaf and blind” (verse 73)
13. Du'a for righteous family — “Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous” (verse 74)

The passage closes with Allah's promise: “Those will be rewarded with the highest place [in Paradise] because they patiently endured, and they will be met therein with a greeting of peace.” (25:75)

Verse 74 contains one of the most beloved du'as in the Qur'an for family:

وَالَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

“And those who say: Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.” (25:74)

This du'a has two parts:
1. “Comfort to our eyes” — asking Allah for a family that brings joy, peace, and satisfaction — righteous spouses and children who are a source of pride, not grief
2. “Make us an example for the righteous” — asking to be leaders in taqwa, not followers — to be a model that others look up to in faith and good deeds
