Frequently Asked Questions about Surah Ash-Shu'ara
Everything you need to know about the Surah of the Poets
What are the benefits of reading Surah Ash-Shu'ara?
• Reward for every believer and disbeliever of seven prophets — the Prophet (ﷺ) said whoever recites it will receive ten good deeds for every person who believed in Nuh, Hud, Salih, Shu'ayb, Ibrahim, Lut, Musa (peace be upon them) and every person who disbelieved in them
• Safety on the Day of Judgment — narrations mention the reciter will be among those who are saved on that Day
• Contains the stories of seven prophets — the greatest gathering of prophetic stories in a single Meccan Surah
• Contains the divine refrain — “Indeed, in that is a sign, but most of them do not believe. And indeed, your Lord — He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful” (repeated 8 times)
• Contains the story of Musa in detail — verses 10–68 narrate his confrontation with Pharaoh
• Contains Ibrahim's argument against idolatry — verses 69–104 — his reasoning against the worship of idols
• Distinguishes true messengers from poets — verses 224–227 clarify that the Prophet (ﷺ) is not a poet but a warner
• Emphasises Tawheed and warnings — the Surah repeatedly calls the disbelievers to fear Allah
Reciting it daily builds certainty in prophecy, in the message of the prophets, and in the reality of the Hereafter.
When is the best time to recite Surah Ash-Shu'ara?
• After Fajr — many Muslims recite it in the mornings for barakah and firmness of faith
• Daily recitation in portions — as part of a complete Qur'an reading schedule (Juz 19)
• Before sleep — as part of a nightly recitation routine
• On Fridays — especially recommended for increased reward
• When reflecting on the prophets — the Surah gathers seven prophets in one continuous narrative
• When facing the mockery of disbelievers — the Surah was revealed to strengthen the Prophet (ﷺ) against the mockery of Quraysh
• When seeking Allah's mercy — the divine refrain “He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful” is a reminder of Allah's two greatest attributes
The key is consistency — even a few ayat daily with reflection transforms the heart.

How many Ayat does Surah Ash-Shu'ara have?
Why is Surah Ash-Shu'ara called "The Poets"?
“And the poets — the deviators follow them. Do you not see that in every valley they roam and that they say what they do not do? Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah often...”
The disbelievers of Quraysh accused the Prophet (ﷺ) of being a poet, a magician, or a madman. This Surah responds:
• The Prophet (ﷺ) is not a poet — his words are divine revelation, not human poetry
• The Qur'an is not poetry — it is the clear Book (verse 2), the criterion of truth
• The poets of Arabia were known for their wandering, exaggerated, and often immoral verses
• The exception — poets who believe, do good deeds, and remember Allah often are praised
The name honours the theme of distinguishing the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Qur'an from the accusations of the disbelievers, and it clarifies that true speech is that which leads to Allah — not that which follows human whims.
What is the divine refrain repeated in Surah Ash-Shu'ara?
“Indeed, in that is a sign, but most of them do not believe. And indeed, your Lord — He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.” (26:8–9, 67–68, 103–104, 121–122, 140–141, 158–159, 174–175, 190–191)
This refrain contains four profound lessons:
1. “Indeed, in that is a sign” — every prophet's story is a sign for those who reflect
2. “but most of them do not believe” — the majority of humanity throughout history has rejected the truth
3. “And indeed, your Lord — He is the Exalted in Might” — Allah has the power to destroy the disbelievers, just as He destroyed previous nations
4. “the Merciful” — despite His power, Allah is the Merciful, who gives every nation the chance to repent
The pairing of Al-Aziz (the Exalted in Might) and Ar-Rahim (the Merciful) is one of the most powerful pairings of divine names in the Qur'an. It teaches that Allah's power and mercy work together — He is severe with the persistent rejecter, and merciful to the sincere believer.
Which prophets' stories are in Surah Ash-Shu'ara?
• Musa (AS) — verses 10–68. The longest story in the Surah. His confrontation with Pharaoh, the miracles of the staff and the shining hand, the magicians' conversion to Islam, the parting of the sea, and the deliverance of Bani Israel
• Ibrahim (AS) — verses 69–104. His reasoning against the worship of idols, his gentle da'wah to his father and his people, and his preservation through the fire
• Nuh (AS) — verses 105–122. His call to his people for 950 years, their rejection, and the flood that drowned them while saving the believers
• Hud (AS) — verses 123–140. Sent to the people of 'Ad, who were powerful and arrogant. When they rejected him, Allah destroyed them by a barren wind
• Salih (AS) — verses 141–159. Sent to the people of Thamud with the she-camel as a sign. They hamstrung her and were destroyed by an earthquake
• Lut (AS) — verses 160–175. Sent to the people of Sodom, who practiced immorality. They were destroyed by stones of clay
• Shu'ayb (AS) — verses 176–191. Sent to the people of Madyan, who cheated in weights and measures. They were destroyed by the punishment of the Day of Shadow
Each story follows the same pattern: the prophet calls to Tawheed, the people reject out of arrogance, and Allah's judgment comes. Together they form a powerful lesson for every generation.
