How many Ayat does Surah An-Najm have?
Why is Surah An-Najm called "The Star"?
“By the star when it descends.” (53:1)
The divine oath by the star introduces one of the most powerful defences of the Prophet (ﷺ) in the Qur'an. The disbelievers of Makkah accused him of being astray, of speaking from his own desire, and of being a madman. Allah responds:
• Verse 2 — “Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred”
• Verse 3 — “Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination”
• Verse 4 — “It is not but a revelation revealed”
The Surah teaches that the Prophet's (ﷺ) message is not his own words but divine revelation — perfect, protected, and free from any error. It also describes his meeting with Jibreel at the highest horizon (verses 5–18), refutes the polytheists' claim that the angels are female deities (verses 19–28), and closes with the command to prostrate and worship Allah (verse 62). The name honours the divine oath that introduces this great defence of the Prophet (ﷺ).
What is the meaning of verse 39 of Surah An-Najm?
وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَانِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
“And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives.” (53:39)
This verse teaches:
1. Every soul is responsible for its own deeds — no one can bear the burden of another
2. Effort is the measure — the reward is based on sincere striving, not claims or lineage
3. No one inherits faith — being born into a Muslim family is a blessing, but personal effort is required
4. Every effort will be seen — verses 40–41 continue: “And that his effort is going to be seen. Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense”
Ibn Kathir said: “This verse teaches that no one will benefit from another's deeds. Each soul will be rewarded or punished for its own effort.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever does a good deed will have ten times its reward, and whoever does an evil deed will have only its equivalent, or Allah will forgive him.” (Sahih Bukhari 42). This verse is a foundation of personal accountability in Islam — it teaches that the path to Paradise is through sincere, personal striving.
