How many Ayat does Surah Ash-Shura have?
Why is Surah Ash-Shura called "The Consultation"?
“And those who have responded to their Lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend.” (42:38)
This verse teaches:
• Shura is a command — the believers do not decide alone; they consult
• Shura is a mark of faith — mentioned alongside prayer and charity
• Shura is the way of the community — the Muslim Ummah should decide important matters through consultation
• Shura prevents tyranny — no single person should dominate the community's decision-making
The Prophet (ﷺ) himself consulted his Companions before major battles — at Badr, Uhud, and the Trench. The Quranic command of Shura was later developed by Muslim scholars into the principle of Islamic governance. The Surah also uses this name to teach that Islam is not a religion of individual ego but of collective responsibility, mutual respect, and shared decision-making.
What is the meaning of verse 25 of Surah Ash-Shura?
وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئَاتِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ
“And it is He who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do.” (42:25)
This verse teaches four truths:
1. Allah accepts repentance — no matter how great the sin, sincere tawbah is always accepted
2. Allah pardons misdeeds — He does not just forgive, He erases the sins
3. Allah knows everything — including what we conceal, so repentance must be sincere
4. The door of tawbah is always open — as long as the soul has not reached the throat and the sun has not risen from the West
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Allah accepts the repentance of His servant as long as he has not reached the death rattle.” (Tirmidhi 3537). He (ﷺ) also said: “Allah is more joyful at the repentance of His servant than a man who finds his lost camel in the desert.” (Sahih Muslim 2747). This verse is a source of hope for every sinner — Allah does not want to punish; He wants to forgive.
