✦ Virtue of Surah Az-Zumar: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites Surah Az-Zumar, Allah will grant him ten good deeds for every person who believes in Tawheed and every person who disbelieves in it, and he will be among those who are safe on the Day of Judgment.” (Reported in Thawab al-A'mal). How many Ayat does Surah Az-Zumar have?
Surah Az-Zumar contains exactly 75 Ayat. It is the 39th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Meccan (Makki), and it spans Juz 23 and 24. It is one of the last Meccan Surahs and is famous for its comprehensive treatment of Tawheed and the greatest verse of hope (verse 53).
Why is Surah Az-Zumar called "The Troops"?
The Surah is named Az-Zumar (The Troops / The Groups) because of verses 71–73, where it describes the two groups of humanity being driven to their final destinations on the Day of Judgment:

• The disbelievers — “And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups until, when they reach it, its gates are opened...” (39:71)
• The believers — “But those who feared their Lord will be driven to Paradise in groups until, when they reach it while its gates have been opened...” (39:73)

The word zumar means groups or troops — humanity will not enter Paradise or Hell as one mass, but in groups and ranks, reflecting their deeds and stations. The angels will drive them, and the gates will be opened for them. The Surah teaches:
1. Every soul belongs to one of two groups — the people of Paradise or the people of Hell
2. The destination is determined by deeds — not by race, wealth, or status
3. The final journey is real — one day we will all be driven to our final home
4. The believers will be honoured — they will be driven to Paradise with honour, not with chains

The name honours the great scene of the Day of Judgment when humanity is separated into eternal groups.
What is the meaning of verse 53 of Surah Az-Zumar?
Verse 53 is one of the most beloved and powerful verses in the entire Qur'an — the greatest verse of hope:

قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

“Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” (39:53)

This verse contains several profound lessons:
• “O My servants” — Allah still calls the sinners His servants, showing that sin does not remove one from Allah's ownership and mercy
• “Who have transgressed against themselves” — the description is gentle, not accusatory
• “Do not despair” — the first command is a prohibition against losing hope
• “Of the mercy of Allah” — Allah's mercy is infinite
• “Indeed, Allah forgives all sins” — no sin is too great for Allah's forgiveness, except dying in disbelief
• “Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful” — the two names of Allah that define His relationship with repentant sinners

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) said: “This is the most hopeful verse in the Qur'an.” Some scholars said: “This verse was revealed for those who had committed the greatest sins — even for those who committed shirk before Islam, so long as they repent.” It is highly recommended to recite this verse when feeling despair, after committing a sin, and for those who feel their sins are too great to be forgiven. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Allah is more merciful to His servant than a mother is to her child.” (Sahih Bukhari 5999)
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah Az-Zumar in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation, protection on the Day of Judgment, and the special virtue of verse 53, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “1” for the opening, “53” for the verse of hope, or “73” for the believers driven to Paradise)
• English keyword (e.g. “hope” or “mercy”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
