✦ Virtue of Surah Ghafir: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites Surah Ghafir, Allah will grant him ten good deeds for every believer and every disbeliever, and he will be among those who are safe on the Day of Judgment.” (Reported in Thawab al-A'mal). Surah Ghafir is called “The Forgiver” — one of the beautiful names of Allah — and “Al-Mu'min” (The Believer) after the believing man from the family of Pharaoh who defended Musa (AS) at the risk of his own life. It contains one of the greatest examples of courage in the Qur'an (verses 28–45). It also contains the famous verse 60 — “And your Lord says: Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” — a divine promise of answered prayer.

How many Ayat does Surah Ghafir have?
Surah Ghafir contains exactly 85 Ayat. It is the 40th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Meccan (Makki), and it is located entirely in Juz 24. It is one of the seven Surahs that begin with the disjoined letters Ha Meem (حم) — the Ha-Meem Surahs — and it is one of the most comprehensive Meccan Surahs on Tawheed and courage in faith.
Why is Surah Ghafir called both "The Forgiver" and "The Believer"?
Surah Ghafir has two names, each highlighting a different aspect:

1. Ghafir (The Forgiver) — from the first verse: “Ha, Meem. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing, the Forgiver of sin, the Accepter of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.” (40:1–3). The name honours Allah's attribute as the Forgiver of sins and the Accepter of repentance.

2. Al-Mu'min (The Believer) — because it narrates the story of the believing man from the family of Pharaoh (verses 28–45) who stood up to defend Musa (AS) at the risk of his own life. This man was a member of Pharaoh's own household — possibly a relative or a high official — yet he had secretly believed in Musa's message. When Pharaoh plotted to kill Musa, this believing man stood up and delivered one of the most powerful speeches in the Qur'an, defending the truth and warning his people of the consequences of rejecting it.

The two names together teach:
• Allah is the Forgiver of sins (Ghafir)
• True faith requires courage even in the face of tyranny (Al-Mu'min)
• The believer who stands for the truth will be honoured forever
What is the meaning of verse 60 of Surah Ghafir?
Verse 60 is one of the most beloved verses about du'a (supplication) in the Qur'an:

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِي سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ

“And your Lord says: Call upon Me; I will respond to you. Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.” (40:60)

This verse teaches:
• Du'a is worship — the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Du'a is worship.” (Tirmidhi 3247)
• Allah commands us to make du'a — it is not optional, it is a divine command
• Allah promises to respond — “I will respond to you” — a certain promise from Allah
• Abandoning du'a is arrogance — those who refuse to call upon Allah are described as arrogant
• The punishment for arrogance — those who disdain du'a will enter Hell contemptible

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever does not ask Allah, Allah becomes angry with him.” (Tirmidhi 3373). Another narration says: “Du'a is the weapon of the believer, the pillar of the religion, and the light of the heavens and the earth.” This verse is the foundation of all Islamic teaching on du'a — Allah is always ready to respond, and the believer should never hesitate to call upon Him.
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah Ghafir in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation, protection on the Day of Judgment, and the special virtue of verse 60 on du'a, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “1” for the opening, “28” for the believing man's speech, or “60” for the du'a verse)
• English keyword (e.g. “believer” or “call upon”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
