✦ Virtue of Surah Al-Hujurat: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah will grant him ten good deeds for every person who obeyed the Prophet (ﷺ) and every person who disobeyed him, and he will be among those who are safe on the Day of Judgment.” (Reported in Thawab al-A'mal). Surah Al-Hujurat is called “The Rooms” because it opens with the story of those who called out to the Prophet (ﷺ) from behind the rooms of his wives (verse 4). Despite being only 18 verses, it is one of the most comprehensive Surahs on Islamic manners — establishing the etiquette of dealing with the Prophet (ﷺ), the importance of verifying news, the prohibition of backbiting and suspicion, the command of brotherhood, and the declaration that nobility is measured by taqwa, not lineage or wealth.

How many Ayat does Surah Al-Hujurat have?
Surah Al-Hujurat contains exactly 18 Ayat. It is the 49th Surah of the Holy Qur'an, classified as Madinan (Madani), and it is located entirely in Juz 26. Despite being one of the shortest Madinan Surahs, it is one of the most comprehensive in moral guidance — covering manners, brotherhood, taqwa, and the etiquette of community life.
Why is Surah Al-Hujurat called "The Rooms"?
The Surah is named Al-Hujurat (The Rooms) after verse 4:

“Indeed, those who call you from behind the chambers — most of them do not use reason.” (49:4)

The word al-hujurat means the rooms — referring to the private apartments of the Prophet's wives (the Mothers of the Believers) attached to the Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah. The context: some Bedouins came to Madinah and called out to the Prophet (ﷺ) in a loud, rude manner from behind the rooms, demanding that he come out to them. Allah revealed this Surah to teach them the proper etiquette of dealing with the Prophet (ﷺ).

The name honours this event and establishes the foundational principle: respect for the Prophet (ﷺ) and the sacred boundaries of his household. From this opening, the Surah expands into a comprehensive code of Islamic manners:
1. Etiquette with the Prophet (ﷺ) — verses 1–5
2. Verification of news — verse 6
3. Reconciliation between believers — verses 9–10
4. Prohibition of mockery and insults — verse 11
5. Prohibition of suspicion, spying, and backbiting — verse 12
6. Equality of all humanity and the measure of taqwa — verse 13
7. True faith is a favour from Allah — verses 14–18
What is the meaning of verse 13 of Surah Al-Hujurat?
Verse 13 is one of the most famous verses about human equality and dignity in the Qur'an:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ

“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.” (49:13)

This verse teaches four foundational truths:
1. All humanity is one family — created from a single male and female (Adam and Hawwa). No race, nation, or tribe is superior to another by birth
2. Diversity is for recognition, not superiority — “peoples and tribes that you may know one another” — not to look down on one another
3. The only measure of nobility is taqwa — “the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you” — not wealth, race, or lineage
4. Allah knows every heart — “Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted” — no outward claim of nobility can deceive Him

The Prophet (ﷺ) said in his Farewell Sermon: “O people, your Lord is one, and your father is one. All of you are from Adam, and Adam is from dust. There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for a non-Arab over an Arab; nor for a white over a black, nor for a black over a white — except by taqwa.” (Musnad Ahmad 23489). This verse is a complete charter of human rights and equality in Islam.
Which Arabic script is used in this tool?
This tool uses the Uthmani script (Madani Mushaf) with complete Tashkeel (Harakat). The font is Amiri — an industry-standard Arabic calligraphic font.
Is the English translation authentic?
Yes. This tool uses the Sahih International English translation — one of the most widely accepted, scholarly-reviewed translations of the Qur'an available in modern English.
Can I read Surah Al-Hujurat in English only?
You can read the English translation to understand the meaning, but the reward and spiritual benefit come from reciting the Arabic text — as with all Surahs of the Qur'an. English is a scholarly interpretation of the meaning; the Qur'an itself is the Arabic revelation. For daily recitation, building good character, and the rewards mentioned in the narrations, the Arabic must be recited.
How do I search for a specific Ayat in this tool?
Use the search box above the topic index. You can search by:
• Ayat number (e.g. type “6” for the verification verse, “12” for the backbiting verse, or “13” for the taqwa verse)
• English keyword (e.g. “brothers” or “noble”)
• Arabic text (copy-paste any Arabic word)

The list filters instantly as you type.
